number is optional but would be appreciated.

receive a free shipping label. There is no cost
to you for sending the phones.
- You pack up your phones
and send them.
- We will send to you an
acknowledgement for your donation by regular
mail.
Additional information you
need:
HOW OFTEN CAN PHONES BE
SHIPPED?
The program is ongoing, so you
can collect and ship year round!
IS THERE A COST FOR
SHIPPING?
NO. There is no cost for
shipping 10 or more cell phones.
IS THERE A MINIMUM SHIPMENT
QUANTITY PER BOX?
Yes. To make sure we are
efficiently using our recourses, there is a 10 cell
phone minimum per box.
SHOULD I COUNT, LIST, AND/OR
ITEMIZE THE PHONES BEFORE I SHIP?
It’s up to you. We will provide
a breakdown of your donation with your donation
receipt.
IS A DONATION OF A CELL
PHONE TAX DEDUCTABLE?
Narconon Drug Prevention &
Education, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit tax exempt
organization. Tax ID 95-4853440. Donations of cell
phone can be tax deductable. Please consult with
your tax advisor for information on how to claim a
deduction on your tax return.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL
PACKING REQUIREMENTS?
Not many. Our shipping process
is simple and straightforward. You will receive
detailed instructions with your free shipping label.
DO YOU TAKE OTHER
ACCESSORIES (TRANSFORMERS, CHARGING BASES, ETC?)
At this time we are not able to accept transformers,
charging bases, cigarette plugs, earpieces, or
manuals. We can only collect the phones and
batteries.
To recycle chargers and other
accessories, check with your local waste management
agency regarding what regulations are required in
your area.
ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL
SHIPPING REQUIREMENTS FOR BATTERIES?
Any batteries included in your
shipment must be attached to their corresponding
phones (if the battery is unavailable, we will
accept the phone by itself). If you are shipping
twelve (12) or more "extra" or "loose" batteries,
please call us for further instructions.
WHAT ABOUT BATTERIES?
We need the batteries and the
battery covers (battery covers are the plastic
“back” of the phone that covers the battery.)
When shipping, please make sure any batteries
included in your shipment are attached to their
corresponding phones. If the battery is
unavailable, we will accept the phone by itself.
IS THE PERSONAL DATA ERASED
FROM THE PHONES?
For the majority of phones, our
recycling partner utilizes “flashing” software,
manufacturer reset codes, or manual resetting
processes to erase personal data.
For some phones, selected
refurbishment companies erase the personal data.
These companies specialize in the refurbishment of
specific models. Phones without “re-use” value are
shredded and smelted through an environmentally
responsible metals refining process. The personal
data is erased through the destruction of the phone.
Furthermore:
All “SIM Cards” that contain
personal data are destroyed by the recycler.
If we cannot access the memory
(e.g. phone cannot be turned on, broken screen,
etc.), the phone will be sold for parts to be used
in the refurbishment process.
Industry fact: In order for a
“retired” phone to be re-used, various country and
operator codes MUST be programmed into the phones.
This “flashing” process, which is performed using
specialized software, erases all prior user data.
We always recommend that any
person or organization recycling cell phone(s), who
has any concern about personal data, should erase
the data in the phone(s) before recycling. Data
erasing instructions are commonly found in the
phone’s user manual. If you are not sure what to do
or have any questions, please contact us at
888-800-8331. Additionally, be sure to deactivate
your cell phone service prior to shipping your
phones.
How cell phones are recycled.
REUSE: Approximately
60% of recycled cell phones have resale value as
refurbished cell phones. Through a Reuse program,
the recycler distributes cell phones to wireless
markets worldwide in need of affordable
communication. The reuse of used electronics is
applauded by many environmentalists as an essential
step in the electronics recycling process.
REFINING: Approximately
40% of recycled cell phones do not have resale
value, and are processed through an environmentally
responsible “Refining” program. Through the
Refining program, phones are shredded and smelted at
a copper refiner, and various metals are “reclaimed”
back to their natural state. This process, often
referred to as “above ground mining”, is applauded
by many environmentalists as an essential step in
the replenishment of our natural resources.
