William Benitez, an inmate of
Arizona State Prison, founded the NARCONON program in 1966. Benitez read a book
by American author L. Ron Hubbard, and by applying the principles it contained
on increasing one's abilities, he and dozens of other inmates were able to
permanently end their addictions to heroin. The Narconon program has evolved
from that simple beginning to a worldwide network of drug prevention and
rehabilitation centers.
Narconon centers around the world
are educating hundreds of thousands of people and rehabilitating thousands of
addicts. Narconon is a non-profit public benefit organization dedicated to
eliminating drug abuse through prevention education and rehabilitation.
The Narconon network consists of
over 100 rehabilitation and drug prevention centers around the world. Our
rehabilitation centers produce a success rate of 76% for recovery from drug
addiction. The Narconon drug prevention centers educate hundreds of thousands
of people each year with live presentations and bring the truth to many more
through video presentations and written materials.

Drug Abuse
Amongst Our Youth
There are currently 15 million
drug users in the United States and an increasingly large number of those are
children. Ours is a nation that largely praises quick fixes and easy relief,
which leads to the event of experimentation followed by
addiction.
The Center on Addiction and
Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University has recently released the results
of a study on drug abuse in rural American communities. This study was funded
by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the results were shocking. Per
this study, 8th graders living in rural American communities are 34 % more
likely than their urban counterparts to smoke marijuana, 83% more likely to use
crack cocaine, and 104% more likely to use amphetamines within the last month.
This demonstrates that drug abuse is not only a problem of our inner
cities.
An
Effective Approach
It is clear that we must stop drug
abuse before it starts if we are to achieve a reduction of drug abuse in our
society
The need for effective drug
prevention has been established for many years. Families, educators and
community leaders realize that most drug prevention and education methods have
been ineffective.
The NARCONON® Drug Prevention
and Education program has demonstrated effectiveness as a solution to keeping
kids off drugs. Outcome studies show that early drug prevention must give young
children the truth, the vital information and tools they need to make their own
choice to keep away from drugs. Our track record over the past two decades is
impressive with key results being reported.
The
Narconon Drug Education program assists schools in meeting several criteria for
U.S. Department of Education Title IV (Safe and Drug Free Schools) funds:
- By continually monitoring trends
in youth substance abuse, the Narconon Drug Education program keeps pace with
changing community needs. Presentations are real and reflect what kids are
actually doing.
- The Narconon program surveys every
presentation to generate data on changes in perception of risk, program
efficacy and for quality control. Schools are required to use strategies that
provide evidence of prevention or reduction in drug use. The Narconon program
consistently obtains these results.
